On this episode of Rocky Mountain Residential, we sit down with Russell Baker, co-founder of Black Timber Builders, to explore how Passivehaus design is reshaping homes and communities in Colorado. Founded in 2011, Black Timber Builders has become a national leader in high-performance building. Their homes don’t just meet Passive House standards—they’ve set a benchmark few have achieved, with residences tested at just 0.23 air changes per hour (ACH). To their knowledge, no single-family home in the U.S. has surpassed that level of airtightness. And now, they’re going even further—building the first Passivehaus community in the nation, right here in Northern Colorado. These results come from: Continuous insulation and airtight building envelopes Triple-glazed windows and solar orientation Energy Recovery Ventilation (ERV) systems that provide fresh, filtered air while retaining up to 95% of indoor warmth The impact in Colorado’s climate—marked by sub-zero winters and frequent wildfire smoke—is profound. These homes maintain warmth with little mechanical heating, keep air consistently clean, and dramatically cut energy demand.
