This video is an episode in the History On Your Doorstep series. Written, presented and published by Welsh author and historian; Graham Loveluck-Edwards for broadcast on Bro Radio. In this series I examine a moment in Welsh history with the help of experts in their field. In this episode, I talk to Brett Exton from the Hut 9 (Island Farm) Preservation Society. We look at the background and the fall out from the largest break out of German Prisoners of War ever on British soil on 10th March 1945. 70 Germans escaped through a tunnel and the eye of the nation was on South Wales. But there is a lot more to the history of Island Farm than that night. We look at how the camp came into being and its intended role to support people working at the munitions factory in Bridgend. Itself the largest factory in Britain at the time. We look at its role in the run up to D-Day and its post war role as a holding bay for top German brass awaiting trial at Nuremberg. I hope you enjoy this video. And if you do, please subscribe to this channel and share on social media.
