In this Autodesk Fusion 360 quick tip video, we will answer the question: Should you ground the first part of an assembly, or make an as-built joint? In this video, we have two robotic gripper assemblies with one subtle difference. The gray assembly uses a ground in the history to tie down the first part. The assembly in Fusion 360 orange and blue uses a rigid as-built joint between the same part in the top-level assembly. On first look, they operate the same. But what if you insert the sub-assemblies into a master assembly? That’s what we’re going to do. To lock these in place, we’re going to create rigid as-built joints between them in the master assembly. The command SHIFT + J can be used to rapidly create these joints. Once locked into their respective locations, we can check their mechanics. The assembly using an as-built joint works as expected. However, with respect to the gray assembly with the ground feature, we must note: grounding only acts to lock the origin of the grounded component to the top level of that design. And, as demonstrated here, if an assembly with a grounded part is inserted into another assembly, those grounded parts are now floating as well as any others that are tied to that original.
