How long should my razor blades last?

How long do blades last? and, How many shaves do you get out of one blade? Well, there are two theories that I'm aware of and they go something like this: Theory #1 - The sharper the blade the longer it will last because it dulls a little each time and therefore stays usable for more shaves. Theory #2 - The sharper the blade, the thinner the edge and it will deteriorate faster than a blade that starts off duller and thicker. The reasoning here is that the thinner one is more fragile and easier to break apart to an uneven edge in the same way a really sharp pencil will break easier than one that's a little blunter. So, how do we answer the question. We need to look at the nature and strength of human hair. Hair is surprisingly strong, in fact it is thought that hair is as strong, if not stronger than copper wire of the same diameter. The process of cutting whiskers almost immediately blunt the razors edge. As you can see here in this micrograph of a blade. This has to effect the efficacy of the blade, and with each pass, the sharpness and therefore effectiveness is diminished. Based on my experience thus far I have to say that the sharper the blade, the more marked the deterioration of the edge. That's not to say that sharp blades cannot be used for 6 or 7 shaves, it's just that I wouldn't. This brings me to the second part of my question, "How many shaves do you get out of one blade?" Typically, I would say no more than 3. I don't use blades more than 3 times. That's just me. And that's why finding a blade that's right for you is very important. Facebook   / shave.  .
