The basics of what makes a romance novel different from a novel with romance in it. Aaaaaannd it just occurred to me that I did not tell you what these novels actually ARE. The Memory-Keeper's Daughter: Literary Fiction (It's realistic and recent enough at the time of its publication that it isn't historical. It follows multiple lives, is character-driven, relies heavily on family drama, and uses decorative language. These are four common properties of literary fiction.) It's age category is Adult. Thirteen Reasons Why: Contemporary (It's realistic and recent enough not to be called historical.) Twilight: Romance. This specific subgenre is either Urban Fantasy Romance or Paranormal Romance. That's another genre distinction that's hard to parse out, as the two are quite similar. According to some sources, books with vampires are Urban Fantasy, even if they don't take place in a city. ALSO please note: If the relationship is the main plot, but the couple does NOT end up together, you MIGHT call this a tragedy. An example of that would be Romeo and Juliet. One genre that's often mistaken for Romance is Women's Fiction, in which the book is about a woman and her family, self-discovery, and relationships. There is often a strong romantic element in these books.
