The primitive stage is that of nafs al ammara or illusory and false self that incites to evil. The highest station is that of nafs al saffiyah or pure self, where one is completely surrendered by the Divine. The Sufis teach that the whole spiritual life comes down to developing the nafs, denying the ego self from leading and allowing the higher self and Divine Command to lead. This is a journey of awakening to deepening levels of enlightenment, illuminating consciousness and awakening higher levels of awareness.
