Bangladesh has witnessed one of the most historic elections in recent decades. The Bangladesh National Election 2026, held on 12 February 2026, has completely reshaped the political future of the country. This election was conducted for 299 seats of the Jatiya Sangsad (House of the Nation), where more than 127 million eligible Bangladeshi citizens participated. The biggest highlight of this election is that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has returned to power after almost two decades, under the leadership of Tarique Rahman, winning a massive 213 seats. This election is also significant because: ✅ Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League and its famous symbol “Boat” were absent from the ballot box for the first time in nearly 30 years. ✅ The election took place 18 months after Hasina’s ouster on 5 August 2024. ✅ The Muhammad Yunus-led caretaker government will now come to an end. ✅ Jamaat-e-Islami failed to win even 100 seats, despite being a major alliance partner. ✅ Only 7 women candidates won, mostly from BNP. ✅ The role of the National Citizen Party (NCP) is also important as it won 5 out of 30 contested seats. Now the biggest geopolitical question remains: 👉 How will Tarique Rahman’s BNP government shape relations with India? 👉 Will Bangladesh’s foreign policy shift? 👉 What should India do, considering the two nations share a 4000 km border?
