Make a queenless nuc with resources from a queen-right hive. (Sorry for the background noise and quiet parts - I didn't bring a mic with me for the recording). All the important notes below: When following this method your success rate for introducing a ready to emerge queen cell, or virgin queen is much higher than if you made the nuc on the fly and introduced a cell right away. By waiting 5-7 days and then clearing any queen cells they have made before introducing your queen cell, or virgin queen you will have left them no option to make their own queen. At this point they will be "desperate" to accept what you introduce. There are a few advantages for making nucs "weak". You want just enough nurse bees to take care of the new queen while she goes on mating flights and then starts to lay. It will be easier to find any cells they made so you can remove them. Minimal investment of resources while your new queen gets going. After the queen starts laying and you have capped worker brood you can add more resources and help build them up. While this method helps with acceptance, bad weather and/or predators still can lead to a failed queen. Timeline: Ready to emerge cell or virgin queen: Maturing/Hardening : 5-6 days (virgin queens may already be ready to mate). Mating : Allow 1-2 days when you have mostly sunny or better weather above 65-70F Laying : Usually starts 2-3 days after mating. Capped brood : 9 days Emerged worker brood : Additional 11 days after capping Under ideal conditions you can have emerged worker brood in 28 days. With iffy weather it might be 40-45 days. With a weak nuc you will need to add resources when the queen starts laying or there won't be enough bees left to keep the brood warm.
