“Tempest” is an orchestral piece inspired by the powerful and tumultuous storms of Utah. The piece opens with a dark phrase in the low strings that leads to the higher strings, imitating rain. This then builds into a whirlwind, with the strings now imitating dust blowing in the wind as the storm picks up. As the storm further intensifies, the full orchestra erupts into a loud, relentless section emphasizing the magnitude of the storm. Before it settles down, there are sharp outbursts of the opening “rain” motif in the strings. The piece ends with the melodic material in a much more blissful context, mirroring the storm’s passing.
