Director, writer and YouTube star Bo Burnham gives his candid thoughts on the MPAA’s R rating for “Eighth Grade.” Burnham reveals to Salon’s Mary Elizabeth Williams on “Salon Talks” why he didn’t try to “soften” the film’s language and sexually suggestive content to receive a lower rating that would have allowed all middle school-aged kids to see the movie in theaters. The film centers on a 13-year-old Kayla’s very realistic and very awkward experiences as a middle school student. “‘Eighth Grade’ is R-rated because eighth grade is R-rated. That’s just the truth of it,” Burnham told SalonTV. “I can promise to parents that this movie is not exposing anything to kids that kids aren't very, very aware of.” Watch the interview above to hear how Burnham found inspiration in how teenagers use the internet, social media and technology and what his early days as a successful YouTuber taught him about making movies. --- Subscribe to SalonTV’s Channel HERE: / salontv For more content from SalonTV, click HERE: https://video.salon.com Like Salon on Facebook HERE: / salon Follow Salon on Twitter HERE: / salon Follow Salon on Instagram HERE: / salonofficial Watch SalonTV daily at 12 PM ET / 9 AM PT and 4 PM ET / 1 PM PT, streaming live on YouTube, Facebook and Periscope. --- About “Salon Talks” Hosted by Salon journalists, “Salon Talks” episodes offer a fresh take on the long-form interview format, and a much-needed break from the partisan political talking heads that have come to dominate the genre. “Salon Talks” is a destination for information through conversation.
