In a single month, around half a million Rohingya refugees crossed the border into Bangladesh, fleeing a brutal operation by the Myanmar military. This assault involved mass killings, the razing of villages, enforced starvation and forced eviction. It resulted in over 70,000 refugees fleeing Myanmar into Bangladesh in just two months. This video explores #research that raised worldwide #awareness of the persecution of #Rohingya #Muslims in Myanmar’s Rakhine State and highlighted possible stages in a process of genocide. Professor Penny Green, Dr Thomas McManus and Alicia de la Cour Venning at the International State Crime Initiative have helped reframe global understanding of the #persecution of the Rohingya, briefing the United Nations, the UK government, #humanrights and #humanitarian organisations and charities, and more than 500 media outlets. The research involved fieldwork to gather experiences and perceptions of both perpetrator and victim communities. Learn more about the process by watching the video.
