Christopher Timmermann - Psychedelics, neurophenomenology and non-ordinary states of consciousness

Psychedelics present a unique way of perturbing conscious experience without affecting arousal or vigilance, by inducing unique experiences of imagery, enhanced meaning and mystical-type phenomena. A neurophenomenological approach provides a useful way to understand the relationship between these experiential effects and their relationship to neural activity. I will present our neurophenomenological work on psychedelics at Imperial College London as well as a recent framework developed for non-ordinary states of consciousness more generally. The latter states that non-ordinary states provide a unique access to structural aspects of experience and their relationship with brain dynamics, such as agency and the sense of self, thereby potentially advancing our understanding of consciousness
