Fig Fam! Coffee and Figs ;) What if I told you that I’m pruning all my fig trees in the coming weeks for you to grow your own fig trees this winter? One problem, I don't think my trees are ready! However! My fig trees still have some leaves on them, despite their fall process and I have decided to remove the rest of the leaves and unripened fruit by hand, but why?! "Won't they lose their leaves and fruit on their own?" Yes. However, the dormancy process can take a long time and I want to expedite the dormancy process on my fig trees. You can root a fig cutting ANY time of year as they have rooting hormones at the nodes and their cambium layer. The key to rooting success, is using the hardened off wood which can take a season to develop. Sometimes with lots of energy in the tree with sap flow cuttings can have difficulty in storage and which time commitments the long lasting storage of figs tree cuttings can OCCASIONALLY be compromised. The BEST bet? Wait until the growing season is over and your tree has slowed down lost their leaves and then harvest any branches for propogation. AI have my propagation work ahead of me for next year's trees and in order to jump start on that propagation process I need the time this winter to do so! Also, pruning fig trees I need to care for the scars that can occur from heavy pruning and sometimes it can be difficult for trees to heal during the cold months as a pruned tip can expose inner layers of the tree and release moisture which could lead to drying and decay of the branch come spring. (I've learned this from experience!) As for cuttings! Two weeks away from launching fig cuttings sale on philsfigs.com!
