Using the SquashFS method, I compressed each game individually into a single image file, similar to an ISO, and created an amazing archive of modern games. When you launch a game through the Batocera Linux interface, this image mounts instantly and opens right away. I saved around 13 TB of storage in total. After two years of meticulous organization, my 22TB drive project is finally complete. In the end, I now have a fully bootable Batocera Linux external drive containing essentially 35TB of content, including background images, custom icons, uniform game boxes, videosnaps (all rendered by me), and no missing media. It’s built to last and will never become outdated. I also wanted to share the game list. I chose a vertical carousel menu theme, but there are dozens of options available. The drive is extremely fast, with read and write speeds of 300 MB/s, which means there’s absolutely no performance compromise when playing. There are no issues with save files or resuming from checkpoints—I’ve played and finished dozens of games from this drive over the past two years. With a USB hub connected to a power adapter, all my handheld devices charge through a single cable while I continue gaming seamlessly, including my Steam Deck, Lenovo Legion GO, and ROG Ally X. This video was recorded on my ASUS Z13 Flow. I’m not sure if I still need to explain Linux gaming, but the reason I chose Batocera Linux is that it has no desktop environment and only runs the simple EmulationStation script, which consumes almost zero system resources. It also automatically detects drivers on any hardware I boot it on. What “low system resource usage” means in practice is higher FPS. On the same hardware, I’ve observed up to 16-17 FPS higher performance compared to Windows. I configured about 20 different Wine and Proton builds for each game, tweaking settings to get every title running perfectly. Some games took months to optimize. With the integrated Moonlight-Sunshine plugin, I continued gaming from my MacBook Air, my TV, and even my phone from the comfort of my bed. This video was actually recorded on my MacBook via Moonlight. Sunshine works just like Nvidia’s GeForce Now, but completely free. On any computer I boot with this drive, the Sunshine service starts automatically. All you need is an internet connection. Batocera Linux is actually an emulation-focused operating system, which might make you think it’s for emulating systems like the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, or Xbox 360. But that’s not really the case. Emulation means running extra algorithms for the CPU, and here we’re talking about very modern, high-end graphics games. This project is aimed at delivering a native console-like experience!
