Prunus spinosa or blackthorn is one of the U.K's finest native species to cultivate as bonsai. The tree has very small oval leaves, little white flowers in early spring and purple fruits in late summer. The tree develops very fine ramification in time. When old blackthorn also develop beautiful jet black craggy bark. Finding good blackthorn for bonsai is not easy, their natural suckering habit produces masses of thin straight shoots, normally only with roots a long way from the trunk. The best blackthorn in the world come from the scree slopes and sheep pastures of Wales. In these conditions the trees grow small and twisted due to the constant attention of the sheep. However once a good tree is located it is still incredibly hard to remove the tree and keep it alive. In bonsai cultivation blackthorn are very simple and can be treated exactly as hawthorn and other native deciduous trees. A nice little blackthorn that is well established and has the basics in place, just needs time and care to develop further.
