Research-based knowledge is an important part of policy making and the fulfillment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). But it is often challenging to make science accessible and relevant to a wider audience. At the same time, most people are inclined to avoid uncomfortable truths and stay in their comfort zone rather than change their behaviour and attitude – no matter what the scientists say. In this episode of the Communication Accelerator, we highlight the importance of making complex issues, such as water and climate change, comprehensible and relevant for non-scholarly audiences. How do we bridge the widening gap between science and society? And how can we counter fake news with facts and science? We also take a closer look at effective methods and best practices when communicating science. How can we make scientific research more visible to the public, and are there country-specific factors such as history, culture and politics to take into account when doing so?
