Nigeria has begun rolling out far-reaching tax reforms, setting off intense backlash from opposition parties, civil society groups, and student bodies. The African Democratic Congress, Labour Party, and the National Association of Nigerian Students warn that the measures could deepen poverty and worsen public frustration. Former Senate President David Mark has described the reforms as “renewing hopelessness,” while Labour Party leaders insist the taxes are harsh and poorly timed. The government, however, maintains that the reforms are progressive, aimed at the wealthy and necessary to fund infrastructure and economic growth. With legal challenges looming, student protests planned, and public trust under strain, the debate over who truly bears the cost is only getting louder.
