Last summer, Bob Erickson of Westby, Wis., designed a donkey collar and harness system that could be built using materials available and affordable to farmers in third world countries. Today, he designed a one-piece donkey bit fashioned from a piece of rebar (or reinforcing steel) that Tillers International blacksmithing instructor John Sarge built in a few minutes. A prototype, the piece would benefit from some design refinements and further finishing to smooth rough edges. That said, it appears to be a successful design that could be easily replicated by blacksmiths in third world countries using charcoal and primitive forges as well as rebar which is readily available throughout the world as a fundamental component of concrete construction.
