A plenary talk from SPIE Photonics West 2017 - http://spie.org/pw In this plenary talk, Robert Campbell of University of Albert discusses his lab's working to develop new kinds of protein indicators to study neuronal activity. While early calcium indicators were synthetic tools, the Campbell Lab is working on genetically encoded proteins, taking a fluorescent protein and turning it into a calcium indicator, "a proxy for neuronal activity." Robert E. Campbell is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry, University of Alberta. His research is focussed on the engineering and application of fluorescent proteins for neurophotonic applications. His contributions have been recognized with numerous awards including the Teva Canada Limited Biological and Medicinal Chemistry Lectureship Award (2016), the Rutherford Memorial Medal in Chemistry from the Royal Society of Canada (2015), and a Canada Research Chair (2004-2014).
