It later became known as Hidden Splendor. With the Cold War heating up and America hungry for nuclear fuel, that single find ignited a full-blown mining boom. Prospectors rushed in, new deposits were found throughout the San Rafael Swell, and tiny communities sprang up almost overnight. But like most booms, it didn’t last. By the early 1960s, most of the mines and their makeshift towns stood abandoned—ghostly reminders scattered across the desert. We’ve known about Hidden Splendor for years, but the long, rugged drive has always kept us from exploring it… until now. James and I finally synced our schedules, knocked out most of the travel the day before, and camped out so we could hit this remote corner bright and early.
