As it was my 31st birthday I decided to head down to North Kent on the Thames Estuary to a river beach that my mate Andy from Kent Survival had previously camped at. I was joined by Candice and my mate Rob. We were due to be joined by Will too but he has hurt his back. We arrived at the lovely little village of High Halstow at the Red Dog pub for a birthday lunch and a couple of ciders, before heading off towards the estuary. We drove as far as we could along quiet tracks until it ended and the footpaths began. We followed those on the map right down to the river and up onto the sea wall. Here we spotted the river beach of Egypt Bay for the first time. It looked incredible! It was like finding your own private desert island beach. Only colder. Much colder! The temperature dropped as low as 0 degrees celsius overnight and the tents got covered in ice and frost. Inside though they were warm and cosy. After a few drinks and lots of hot food we went to sleep and slept very well. We awoke to a brilliant sunrise and stunning views across the Thames towards Canvey Island and Shellhaven oil refinery, with large container ships going back and forth from the London Gateway Port. We cooked some breakfast, took in the views and reluctantly packed up. It is honestly one of the best wild camp locations I've ever been to and I certainly plan on going back there a few more times.
