Museum guide at KMSKA and PhD in Art and Neurolinguistics from the University of Antwerp, Ihor Biloushchenko takes us on a "Nocturnal Journey" through the exhibition of Belgian sculptor Hans Op de Beeck. His large-scale exhibition "Nachtreis"—one of the most successful among living artists—is on view from March 22 to August 17, 2025, at the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp (KMSKA). Personally, I find the English title "Nocturnal Journey" more evocative. There is something about this immersive project that feels like a promenade through the exhibition, a gliding over uneven paths, a plunge into the atmosphere of an artist whose works can be seen in London, Venice, New York, and Stockholm. A dreamlike world inhabited by his characters—some of whom were modeled after his own daughters. Hans’s cinematic approach to his projects creates a powerful immersive effect of presence, empathy, and participation. You feel as though you're living the destinies of his characters—and, at times, diving into your own memories.
