Xanax, also known as alprazolam, is an anti-anxiety medication from a medication class known as benzodiazepines. While it can work to reduce anxiety, it comes with considerable risks. Many patients who take it as prescribed become physically and psychologically dependent on it. It also has a reputation for being used recreationally by many. In this video, I cover three primary reasons that Xanax can be so addictive. 1. Xanax (alprazolam) works quickly to reduce anxiety and can cause euphoria -- can cause psychological dependence. 2. Tolerance can develop -- need a higher dose to get the same effect. 3. Severe withdrawal effects can occur when the medication is stopped or the dose is reduced. This is more likely with alprazolam than other benzodiazepines because it is short-acting. Severe anxiety, insomnia, irritability, panic attacks, sweating, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, heart palpitations, cognitive difficulties, mood changes, dizziness, and other side effects can occur. In very severe cases, seizures or even death can occur. Who Am I? I'm Dr. Jeff Knuppel, a psychiatrist (M.D.) with over 20 years of practice experience.
