Cycling Industries Europe’s recurring Innovation Webinars place the spotlight on exciting start-ups and SMEs delivering solutions to propel the growth of cycling. In this edition, we’ll be looking at how companies are innovating to tackle two of the biggest barriers to the uptake of cycling: road accidents and theft. The European Cycling Declaration rightly dedicates an entire chapter to improving the safety and security of cyclists, calling for commitments to enhance the security of cyclists as vulnerable road users and increasing efforts to tackle the issue of bike theft. Past research by CIE found that 40% of victims of theft had a bicycle stolen from a residential location and 13% of respondents gave up cycling after theft: when applied to the whole of Europe, theft could lead to a million people giving up cycling. Meanwhile, research by the Cycling Embassy of Denmark recorded that 40% of cycling casualties happened at intersections and that most accidents could have been avoided if the parties had looked both ways. Better infrastructure undeniably plays a major role in ensuring safer riding, but even in countries like Denmark that boast world-class roads, the human factor still plays a part. Innovative parking facilities, identifying and addressing accident hot spots, smart visibility and bicycle tracking technology are answers being delivered by CIE member companies and project partners that we are featuring in this upcoming webinar. Mobilising smart technologies and data generation lie at the heart of these companies’ approaches to making the world of cycling more safe and secure. The five companies striving to make cycling safer and tackling bike theft include: How digital bicycle identification delivers effective anti-theft solutions and more: Hélène Gaspar, Velopass & Duilly Cicarini, Smart Serial Number Empowering Cyclists & Cities with Award-Winning Smart Bike Lights & Transformative Sensor Data Insights: Irene McAleese, See.Sense Data-driven insights to identify potential hazards and improvement of the cycling infrastructure to help reduce crashes and injurie: Jose Gutiérrez, Lane Patrol A network of secure, automatic, elevated & smart parking for bikes: Jordi Duran, UpandBike Moderated by Camille Ducellier of Cycling Industries Europe
