BLANTYRE PRISON - DEBWE & MBETA ZIDYANJI COMEDY, CHREAA ON VOTING AWARENESS #comedy CHREAA CIVIC EDUCATE BLANTYRE PRISON INMATES ON THE NEED TO VOTE Blantyre, 22nd August, 2025 - Centre for Human Rights Education Advice and Assistance embarked on the campaign civic educating Blantyre inmates on the importance of voting in as part of exercising their right to vote. Speaking during the campaign, CHREAA' s Executive Director Mr Victor Mhango emphasized that the prisoners as every individual has the right to vote any candidate of their choice. "Voting is good for everyone and a responsible citizen of this country has the right to vote a candidate of his or her choice. In this regard, you inmates are no exception to this particular issue as you are human beings just like everyone else out there", He said. In his remarks, The Officer In Charge, Deputy Commissioner of Prisons, Mr. Owen Levi Maharawipha described the development as timely as Malawi is close to conduct general elections come September 16 this year. He said, " This is good initiative as you know our inmates are restricted some of their freedom to such an exposure, hence you coming in is quite a very exciting idea as they have learnt more from you and hopefully they will take that initiative to vote", He commented. The event continued with giving the platform to the inmates to air their views and concerns on the topic of the day. Speaking on behalf of the inmates, Davie Mtendere was quick to stress out on the need to have access to aspiring candidates' manifestos. "Indeed we have gasped alot from this orientation but as you know, laws denies us from listening to these candidates manifestos but with the audios played, now we have an idea on who to vote as we have a picture of whom we are voting for", He explained. The event was spiced up by a short comedy titled "Even One vote counts" from Blantyre Prison Cultural Troop.
