Exact documents on the time of the establishment of the local royal castle have not been preserved. According to unverified reports, the castle was built as early as 1128 to protect the important Považská road. However, the first mention is from 1316 , where it is mentioned as Bystrický hrad . In 1458, King Matthias donated it to the Podmanický family (Ján and Rafael are especially famous). The new owners repaired all the buildings and expanded the castle. A great fire in 1543 severely damaged individual buildings. During the repair, some architectural elements were changed and the castle was expanded with a forecourt. The Podmanický family owned the castle until its extinction in 1558.
