Dr. Karen Randall, an emergency physician trained in cannabis science and medicine, warns of the serious and escalating harms associated with today’s high-potency cannabis products. After moving to Colorado just before legalization, she began seeing disturbing patterns in the ER that sharply contrasted with the outdated image of marijuana as a mild, harmless substance. She describes cases of cannabis-induced psychosis, addiction, suicidality, and a rise in cannabis hyperemesis syndrome—such as a 15-year-old girl who visited the ER over 70 times in a year due to uncontrollable vomiting. One of the most tragic cases that compelled her to speak out was a suicidal 13-year-old girl whose parents introduced her to cannabis at age 11, leading her into addiction and trading sex for marijuana by middle school. Dr. Randall emphasizes that today's cannabis, often reaching THC concentrations of 90% or more, bears little resemblance to marijuana of the past, especially as the protective compound CBD has been bred out. She highlights how the normalization of cannabis has fueled youth use, homelessness, mental illness, and overwhelmed healthcare systems—while cannabis companies profit and communities shoulder the cost. With no consistent treatment protocols and widespread denial about cannabis’s risks, she urges lawmakers and the public to witness firsthand the devastation in ERs and to rethink policies that treat cannabis as safe, benign, or medicinal without proper regulation and education.
