Have you ever come out as trans or nonbinary, only to be told to "keep that gender stuff to yourself?" I know I have. So in case this ever happens to you, I wanted to share some things you can say in response about why that sentiment is both unrealistic and transphobic. Trans Awareness Week 2021 begins today and concludes with Trans Day of Remembrance on November 20, which honors those who lost their lives to transphobic violence each year. This has been one of the deadliest years for trans and nonbinary folks in the US (where I live), with at least 45 people murdered as of the time of posting this video. This is extremely tragic but also unsurprising given the numerous anti-trans bills and laws that have sprung up in the US over the last year. Transphobia and trans-exclusionary radical feminist (TERF) rhetoric are also gaining more traction not just in the US, but around the world. This is why it's so important to combat transphobia when you see it. Whether it's blatant hatred/violence or a seemingly "innocent" comment like the one I address in this video, it all contributes to the marginalization and harm of trans people. We have to stop it in its tracks before it gets worse. If you have any questions or comments, I would love to hear from you. Most social media algorithms are notoriously unfriendly to queer content, so if you could please like, subscribe, and share this video with anyone who would be interested, I would super appreciate it! :) Music used in this video: Darker Thoughts by Silent Partner from the YouTube Audio Library You can find me on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, & Original Glaze at @gckinsey
