DTU provides robust engineering solutions tailored for extreme conditions. The harsh and extreme environment, sparse infrastructure and isolated communities are a particular challenge when working in the Arctic. The results, however, are very robust engineering solutions tailored for extreme conditions. DTU combines knowledge and expertise across relevant academic fields, as well as a strong presence in Greenland, to create solutions to deal with the consequences of a changing climate. DTU researchers are working on sustainable building materials, renewable energy, and conducting research into the adverse effects Arctic conditions have on buildings. DTU are looking at the effect climate change is having on permafrost in the region, and the effect this might have on building and construction in the Arctic. After thawing, the organic carbon that was bound in the permafrost is released into the ecosystem. DTU are investigating whether this is diluted into the Arctic Ocean or broken down by bacteria and returned to the atmosphere as CO2, as well as any potential effect it might have on fish stock. At the same time DTU is working to validate satellite data about changes in sea ice and ice sheets through airborne field campaigns and in-situ testing, in order to get accurate measurements about the development in the thickness and distribution of sea ice and ice caps. Based on its expertise in this range of issues, DTU provides education in a wide range of engineering specialties with a specific focus on Arctic issues, and offers students at all levels the chance to visit field locations in the region.
