Erin Furr Stimming, MD, FAAN, FANA, McGovern Medical School, UTHealth, Houston, TX, discusses chorea associated with Huntington’s disease (HD), a rare inherited neurodegenerative disorder that causes the breakdown of neurons and leads to a triad of symptoms: cognitive, motor, and psychiatric. Chorea is an involuntary and irregular movement that is a hallmark motor symptom of HD. Approximately 90% of the 41,000 individuals in the US affected by HD will eventually develop chorea, which can significantly negatively impact their quality of life and functional independence. Dr Furr Stimming emphasizes the burden placed on both patients and their caregivers due to the challenges posed by chorea.
