Leaf folder adults are seen in Rice fields. It's life cycle and economic impact is discussed. The rice leaf folder is a common pest and can be found in all rice growth stages. The most damaging stage is during tillering as this can reduce the yield of the crop. The caterpillars can survive between rice crops by feeding on weeds around the bunds. High nitrogen fertilizer creates lots of new rice plant growth which encourages the moth to grow and multiply. The life cycle of a leaf folder is about 1.5 months (egg- 5 days, larva- 25 days, pupa- 7 days and adult moth- 10 days). The damage caused by leaffolders may be important when it affects more than half of the flag leaf and the next two youngest leaves in each tiller. At vegetative phase, crops can generally recover from damage; but when leaffolders infest at reproductive phase, the damage can be economically important. High feeding damage on the flag leaves can cause yield loss. Most early season insecticide use have little or no economic returns. Instead, it can cause ecological disruptions in natural biological control processes, thus enhancing the development of secondary pests, such as planthoppers. #leaffolder #pattalapet #gob #gobdisundi #lifecycle #control
