Nathan was released this day from Lori's care. It has been 3 intense years of DAILY at home speech therapy, Oral motor therapy (2 years) and school speech therapy - four, 30 minute, private sessions/week along with some OT & PT and Speech Therapy at Connecticut Children's Medical Center and also summer school and summer speech... To say it was a roller coaster of emotional highs and lows full of challenges at every juncture along the way would be an understatement!! ...but we made it and we are here now and it was honestly worth every tear, penny, sleepless night, mile in the car, state traveled, hour on the phone, heartbreaking moment, letter, insurance claim, hour on the internet, book read, video watched, Apraxia Walk, meeting, class, doctor appointment, specialist, vitamin/supplement, diet change and the list goes on... We beat Childhood Apraxia of Speech because I wasn't going to let anything keep Nate down and I wouldn't take 'NO' for an answer, ever. Most importantly, Nate is one of the hardest working people I know and above all, he wanted this for himself. This was a very proud and bittersweet day, a few tears were shed on the hour and a half drive home by me of course, Nate just chatted away in the back seat and sucked down some diet coke with his nuggets and fries :) My husband and shared a few smiles and glances as we listened to Nathan tell us (for 90 minutes!) about every truck, van and police car we passed :) *Moms and Dad's, it it up to you to get your kids the help and tools they need to succeed* After we stopped the video tape at this appointment I asked Lori if we were just 'lucky' to see these results or was Nathan 'not as bad as some of the other kids with Apraxia' and she said flat out "No". She told us that had Nate not gotten the intense and correct treatments for his given issues he would be no different today than he was 3 years ago. The link to unlock your child's voice is out there but YOU have to go and find it!
