The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls across 12 states and union territories, creating a political firestorm, especially in West Bengal. A journalist in the press conference highlighted threats from West Bengal's ruling party, quoting a TMC leader's warning that 'There will be blood bath in West Bengal if voters are deleted'. The ECI official clarified the process, stating that the revision will use electoral rolls from 2002-2004 as a reference to verify voters and that Assam is excluded in this phase. The commission reiterated the Supreme Court's stance that an Aadhaar card is a proof of identity but not of citizenship, domicile, or date of birth.
