★★★ My playlist with BACH family motets:    • BACH - Motets   Johann Michael Bach (1648 - 1694): DAS BLUT JESU CHRISTI Johann Michael Bach was a German composer of the Baroque period. He was the brother of Johann Christoph Bach, as well as father of Johann Sebastian Bach's first wife Maria Barbara. A pamphlet issued by the council in Gehren refers to Johann Michael as a "quiet, withdrawn and artistically well-versed subject"; within the family he was considered a "capable composer". As a composer, in fact, he is on almost the same level as his brother Johann Christoph. Especially in the chorale motet, the vocal form to which he almost exclusively devoted himself, he composed works of real significance. His convincing treatment of spoken declamation is particularly notable. As in his brother's music, the older, strongly homophonic style predominates, but in such works as "Sei lieber Tag willkommen" (written for New Year) he turned to the new, freer style with melismatic passages.
