The Roots cover the Kool And The Gang song "Jungle Boogie" and the Manu Dibango song "Soul Makossa" live in concert at The Masonic Auditorium in San Francisco, California on February 23, 2023. Jungle Boogie appeared on Kool And The Gang's fourth studio album, Wild And Peaceful (1973). Soul Makossa was released by Cameroonian singer Manu Dibango in 1972 and reached Number 35 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The "Mama-say, mama-sa, ma-ma-ko-ssa" hook--which means “I dance” in the Duala language--was used by Michael Jackson in Wanna Be Startin' Somethin" and led to Jackson being sued by Dibango. The Roots are a hip-hop / soul band from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania consisting of Tariq Trotter a/k/a Black Thought (vocals), Ahmir Thompson a/k/a Questlove (drums), Kirk Douglas (guitar), Dave Guy (trumpet), Ian "The Chief" Hendrickson-Smith (saxophone / flute), Damon Bryson a/k/a Tuba Gooding, Jr. (sousaphone), Stro Elliot (percussion), Ray Angry (keyboards and keytar), and Kamal "Maldoc" Gray (keyboards).
