Charted at #78 on Billboard Hot 100 in November 1963. Paul's last Billboard charting single was this peppy tribute to cheerleaders, and the tribulations of dating one. The girls in the photos are all authentic cheerleaders from 1963; high school, college and university levels (specific credits below). This single was a bigger hit in some local markets, among them, Miami, Florida, where it went Top 10, and the weather is always right for cheerleading! I wonder if this is the only Top 40 hit about cheerleaders. Original Billboard review: "Strong teen item here that dovetails with the football season. Exciting side has swing, ya-ya chorus, and big sound that should propel it upward." In order, the pictures depict (all from 1963): The Kilgore College Cheerleaders on the Saturday Evening Post The O.W. Holmes Cheerleaders from South Oak Cliff High School in Dallas, Texas (top: Karen Benton, Tanis Cook, Donna Vail, Carolyn Scroggins. Bottom: Rita Young, Vickie Vandiver, Jayne Dubiski, Janie Chambers) Chattooga High School Cheerleaders from Chattooga County, Georgia (from left to right, Nancy Davidson, Vicki Williams, and Cheryl Hudson) An Arizona State University Cheerleader The Chattooga Junior Varsity High School Cheerleaders from Chattooga County, Georgia (from left to right, (front row) Rhonda Flood, Pat Busby, Pam Hubler, and Claudette Ponder; (back row) Sandra Vaughn, Honey Echols, Mary Ann Woods, Nancy Floyd, and Shelia Morrison) Dickinson College Cheerleaders from Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Paul became a star on "The Donna Reed Show" and had big hits with "My Dad" and "She Can't Find Her Keys". Written by Lee Pockriss & Fred Tobias. Title written as "The Cheer Leader" on the single label. B-side is "Polka Dots and Moonbeams".
