How did the early church’s simple gatherings become the elaborate ceremonies of the medieval Mass? In this session, we’ll trace the historical development of Christian liturgy—from the earliest practices of Word, prayer, and shared meals to the growing formalism, clerical control, and sacrificial theology of the Roman Mass. We’ll also see how the Reformers, Luther, Zwingli, Calvin, and Cranmer, sought to recover gospel clarity by restoring Scripture, edification, and the Lord’s Supper to their rightful place in the church’s worship. Come learn how liturgy shapes theology, and why the Reformation was, at heart, a reformation of worship.
