In October of 2015 I almost died in a flash flood. For several weeks after I was deliriously grateful to be alive, appreciative of the small things, and frankly, as happy as I'd ever been. But it faded quickly, and soon I was back to my status quo levels of moderate blah. In the months that followed I decided I wanted that gratitude back, and I set off to get it. In this video I talk about three ways I've learned to reframe my life in terms of death and the transience of all things — a practice known as memento mori — which leads to happiness and a better ability to cope with the problems and annoyances of life. ✉️ Consider my Free Socratic State of Mind newsletter, where I talk about timeless philosophical wisdom: https://andrewperlot.substack.com/ ▬ Content of this video ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ 0:46 — Modern research on the benefits of reflecting on death 2:35 — How I almost died in a flash flood 3:40 — How happy and grateful I was after surviving the flood 5:10 — Using death to appreciate and love annoying people. 8:08 — Using death to feel gratitude for the small things, and be happier 10:04 — How death can be used to keep yourself on track in life and focused on intrinsic goals. 12:17 — Integrating these memento mori strategies into your everyday life #philosophy #mementomori #stoicism #marcusaurelius #senecaquotes #Death #Happiness #gratitude #irritating #forgiving
