🫀 How do crystals keep your heart pumping? For National Heart Month, we’re shining a light on the hidden materials science behind life-saving medical devices. In this Oxford Spotlight talk, Mujan Seif reveals how metals are made of crystals and how their microscopic structure determines whether a material bends, springs back, or holds firm under stress. From atomic lattices and dislocations to shape-memory alloys like Nitinol, Mujan explains how subtle rearrangements at the crystal scale enable remarkable behaviours. These same principles underpin technologies such as cardiovascular stents, tiny engineered structures that help keep arteries open and hearts beating. This talk is part of our Spotlight: Illuminating Engineering series exploring the big ideas that are changing our world. 🎓 🎤 Recorded live at Spotlight: Illuminating Engineering 📍 Old Fire Station, Oxford | 🗓️ 30 April 2025 📺 Subscribe for more Spotlight Talks from Oxford’s Department of Engineering Science. #NationalHeartMonth #OxfordEngineering #SpotlightTalk #MaterialsScience #BiomedicalEngineering #HeartHealth #ShapeMemoryAlloys #STEM #EngineeringInnovation #SpotlightIE
