Waterton Lakes National Park snuck up on us completely — and ended up being one of the genuine surprises of the entire 7-week trip. Sitting in the southwest corner of Alberta where the Rocky Mountains meet the prairie, Waterton has a character completely its own. The Townsite Campground sits right on the edge of Upper Waterton Lake with the mountains rising directly behind it — one of the more dramatic campground settings we've experienced anywhere. The nearby town of Waterton is charming, walkable and the kind of place you wander through twice just because it's that pleasant. 🏔️ The hiking here is exceptional and covers every ability level — which works out well for a team with mixed preferences. Peggy covered serious ground: Forum Lake and Wall Lake deep in the backcountry, Crandell Lake, the steep and rewarding Bear's Hump overlooking the townsite and lake, the vivid red rock walls of Red Rock Canyon, and the beautiful cascades at both Blakiston Falls and Bertha Falls. Meanwhile John found the shorter options equally rewarding. We are a balanced team. 😄 Cameron Lake offered a different kind of adventure — we rented a canoe and discovered fairly quickly that a canoe requires considerably more coordination than advertised. Single kayaks may be more our speed going forward. The lake was beautiful regardless of our paddling performance. 🛶😅 Much of the park is still recovering from significant forest fires — and we want to be honest about that rather than pretend it away. But there's something genuinely moving about watching a landscape come back. The new growth pushing through the charred trunks, the wildflowers reclaiming the hillsides — it's not the same as an untouched forest, but it has its own quiet beauty worth appreciating. A wonderful park for families, casual hikers and serious trail runners alike. Waterton doesn't get nearly the attention it deserves.
