Stipa-Caproni — The Flying Barrel That Changed Aviation Forever

In 1932, Italian engineer Luigi Stipa and the Caproni company built one of the strangest aircraft in history — a barrel-shaped experimental plane with the engine and propeller enclosed inside a tubular fuselage. Dubbed the "flying barrel," the Stipa-Caproni was designed to prove that a ducted propeller could dramatically increase engine efficiency. While the prototype was canceled after test flights revealed excessive drag, Stipa's intubated propeller concept influenced developments across Europe, from the German Kort nozzle to the French BN.4 night bomber and the Italian Caproni Campini N-1 motorjet. Today, aviation historians recognize the Stipa-Caproni as a forerunner of the modern turbofan engine.
