Territorial Change of Ukraine - From Soviet Republic to Independent State

Why did Ukraine leave the Soviet Union? For that we need to take a look at the territorial evolution of Ukraine. In the history of Ukraine this country once belonged to the Russian Empire before the First World War. During WW1 Ukraine was partly overran by the Germans. In 1917 the Russian Revolution took place. After the bolsheviks seized power they also wanted to take control of Ukraine. But the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk left Ukraine under the German sphere of influence. Meanwhile the Ukrainian People's Republic, or Ukrainian National Republic (UNR), was created. The Ukrainian War of Independence involved many other parties: Poland, White Russian Armies and Nestor Machno's Black Army (the anarchists). During this conflict many short-lived states existed. It made Ukraine part of the Soviet Union. When Stalin was in charge of the Soviet Union he created a man-made famine in which millions of Ukrainians died. This was called the Holodomor. Over the course of the 1930s the Great Terror (Great Purge) would claim many Ukrainian lives. In June 1941 Nazi Germany launched Operation Barbarossa. Ukrainian nationalist Stepan Bandera declared Ukraine independent but this state was very shortlived. Ukraine was conquered by Nazi Germany but after the Battle of Stalingrad the German army retreated. Ukraine became a Soviet republic again. With the dissolution the Soviet Union Ukraine left the Soviet Union. Ukraine became in 1991 an independent country. Yet, from the 2000s two revolutions took place: the Orange Revolution (2004) and the Euromaidan Revolution (2014). Russia annexed Crimea and the War in Donbass began.
