Chasing the NS Toys For Tots Train on the D&H

While the NYSW was running their Toys For Tots train down in New Jersey, Norfolk Southern, Mr. Bennett Levin, and others, stepped up to the plate to make this train happen after Amtrak refused to run it. Norfolk Southern agreed to run the train, and Mr. Levin generously sent his PRR-painted E8A's and a few of his Juniata Terminal coaches to participate in the event. The experience of seeing this train impacted me on a personal level, and not because of the train itself, but because of the cause. When the train came out of the yard, and pulled into view, all of the children got excited. And knowing that this train may not have run, that put a smile on my face. I've always wanted to see the Capital Region train, and going into it, I thought it was going to be like the NJ Toys For Tots trains, where they collect toys. As such, I had a toy ready for donation. To my surprise though, toys were not being collected. They were being handed out. The Marines unloaded bag after bags of gifts. It's one thing to donate your toy, and then be on your way, while the toys are handed out to children behind the scenes. It's different when you see it happen right in front of you. I watched the Marines, the Toys For Tots personnel, and Norfolk Southern employees hand out boxes of cookies, toys, hats, gloves, All of the children were excited to receive their gifts - and it was then I was reminded why I love this time of year. The kindness of giving, helping those who may be less fortunate. You see normal children on the surface - but the reality is, you don't know the details. For all I knew, the gifts they received here are the only gifts they get this year - and it was really nice to see it unfold.
