Cave paintings in Spain (c. 8000 BCE) show people harvesting honey. Egyptians (~2400 BCE): First to practice domesticated beekeeping. Used clay or straw hives, often horizontally stacked and moved by boat along the Nile. Other Ancient Civilizations: Mesopotamia and India: Documented beekeeping practices and honey usage. Greeks and Romans: Used pottery or log hives, recognized importance of smoke and bee behavior. 🛖 Medieval Period (500–1500 CE) Skeps Introduced: Domed hives made of straw or wicker. Common in Europe. Honey and beeswax were valuable commodities (especially for candles in churches). Beekeeping was largely harvest-and-destroy—harvesting often killed the colony. ⚙️ Early Modern Period (1500–1800) Greater observation of bee behavior. Scientific studies on bees, including anatomy and colony structure (e.g., discovering the queen was female). Natural hives (e.g., logs or hollow trees) were still used, but knowledge of bees deepened. 🧪 Revolution in Beekeeping (1800s) 1770s: First movable-comb hives (François Huber’s leaf hive). 1851 – Langstroth Hive Invented: Rev. Lorenzo Langstroth developed the movable frame hive using the concept of bee space (about 3/8 inch). Allowed honey extraction without destroying the hive. Transformed beekeeping into a scalable, non-destructive practice. 🐝 20th Century Beekeeping Standardization: Langstroth hive became global standard. Introduction of beekeeping equipment: smokers, suits, extractors, queen excluders, feeders. Scientific advancements: Understanding of bee diseases and pests. Selective breeding of gentle and productive bees. Pollination services: Beekeeping shifted from honey production to agricultural pollination (especially in the U.S.). 🧬 Modern & Contemporary Beekeeping (21st Century) High-tech beekeeping: Genetic research on bee health and disease resistance. Rise of natural beekeeping: Top-bar and Warre hives promote minimal intervention and natural comb. Focus on colony health over honey yield. Global concerns: Awareness of Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD). Increased research and activism to address pesticides, habitat loss. Urban beekeeping: More hobbyists are keeping bees in cities and suburbs.
