Having a transaxle is one of the most reliable signs that a car is cool. At least that’s the theory — and we’re not talking about front-wheel-drive cars here. In this episode, Derek and Jason discuss front-engine, rear-wheel-drive cars that have their transmission mounted in back. There are only a handful of transaxle sedans ever made, and they’re all cool. There are only slightly more sports cars engineered with this layout. Why? There are benefits (weight distribution) but drawbacks (packaging). Allegedly overcaffeinated, Jason pulls out Wikipedia’s list of every transaxle car ever made, and then goes on a rant about hating the Porsche 928. Which just allows Derek to go on a rant about how great Lancia was. Only a Carmudgeon could go on a rant about something positive. Jason’s deeply technical understanding, made possible by a lifelong obsession with cars, allows him to fully digest what’s going on within an automobile — and then put it into simple terms for others to understand. Also, a Master’s Degree in Law trained him to be impossible to argue with. Derek Tam-Scott still tries. He’s a young automotive expert with old-man taste in cars, and a Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering — which means he knows how to be civil to Jason. Or at least he tries.
