Developed and published by Titus in 1990 I'm well-conversed with the shockingly bad C64 and Amiga versions of this sorry excuse for a game, so I don't know why I thought the GX4000 cartridge release would have been any better. I had originally contemplated playing the basic CPC release, but I was really curious to see what effort (or lack thereof) Titus put into the this cartridge-only version for Amstrad's ill-fated console. Well, it's terrible; in fact it's quite possibly the worst of the bunch I've played so far. The graphics are pretty good (seemingly reworked from the Amiga), and the scrolling is really smooth, but that's about all the positives there are. The enemy artificial intelligence (if you can call it that) is laughable. They respond to your controller input, such as shooting the moment you let go of crouch, which ends up making the whole game a farce; the only way you can win is to look for weaknesses to exploit and repeat, ad infinitum Despite having the best graphics of all the 8-bit versions (including the regular CPC release), all of the cutscenes and end-of-level arrest animations have been cut from the GX4000 version, and there's not even any ending; it simply loops back to the beginning! I can only imagine this was to save on relatively expensive cartridge ROM space, compared to comparatively cheap cassette tape, or even floppy disk. This a hilariously bad game, and it's no wonder the GX4000 was a dismal failure if this was the calibre of game being released. #dicktracy #amstrad #gx4000
