Mo Rocca talks with curator Charles Sable on the history of watchmaking, from the earliest pocket watches up until today's smart watches. Watches have always been thought of as more than just a timepiece; they've been thought of as a fashion accessory, too. Pocket watches became popularized in the mid-1800s when clock parts became miniaturized. In the early 1900s, wristwatches were made for women, but they didn't quite take off until the onset of manned flight, when aviators would use them during their flights. From there, the innovations in watchmaking quickly progressed with the inventions of the self-winding watch, the day-date watch, the electric watch, the digital watch, and the smart watch.
