I finally arrived in Pai, Thailand, a quiet mountain town in the northwest that everyone talks about for its beautiful green rice fields. First stop was the old Japanese WWII bridge over the Pai River. Then I checked into my hotel, explored town, and the next morning rode out to the famous bamboo bridge over the rice fields. It was dry season so the fields weren’t as green as the photos, but Pai still had that peaceful vibe. Then everything changed. Up in the mountains near a viewpoint, a helicopter suddenly appeared. Soldiers rappelling, training on the ground, helicopters flying low across the valley… totally unexpected in the middle of Pai’s calm countryside.
