If you look at any top ten list of the most haunted places in Japan you'll see Oiran Buchi, or Courtesan Abyss. Supposedly during the time of the Takeda clan in the 1500's, there was a gold mine hidden in the hills of Kai province. It employed many men and there were 55 courtesans (oiran) who would entertain them. However, wishing to keep the mine a secret it was decided the oiran would need to be disposed of... So a platform was constructed over the gorge and the women were told to practice dancing for a final party. But while they were practicing, Takeda's men destroyed the supports and all the women fell to their deaths. Some of the bodies washed downstream to the town of Tabayama, but to this day their spirits are thought to still linger in this place. It is believed they seek revenge on any men who would dare approach. Some claim to hear crying or feel impulses near this haunted location. If you dare to visit it's wise to bring a female friend to help keep the yokai at bay...
