Watch nettles being turned into fabric. This film shows harvesting, retting, stalk splitting, pith removal, carding, finger-spinning and knitting. This 'field-to-fabric' process can be used to give school age students an initial experience of extracting fibres from a plant and then turning them into fabric. The film can also be part of an exploration into the feasibility of local textiles production and can be used in Nettle Festivals or during the annual 'Be Nice to Nettles Week'. The list of resources given at the end of the film is reprinted here: Bernard Bertrand "Les Secrets de l'Ortie" Gillian Edom "From Sting to Spin" Birte Ford "Nettle Craft" John-Paul Flintoff "Through the eye of a needle" Piers Warren "101 Uses for Stinging Nettles" Brennels project Netl Park in the Netherlands Sustainable Technology in Nettle Growing (STING) at Leicester's De Montfort University Roger Milne and Laura Hastings "Home Spun Solutions" a 1988 paper for Kew's Centre for Economic Botany Gunter Pauli "From Weed to Work, The Blue Economy" "The Great Nettle Experiment" video by nettlejen "The Nettle Solution" video by GIFTS Films "Stinging Nettle Cordage Without Gloves" Sean Mulhall Companies using nettles (mostly wild Himalayan nettle fabric from Nepal) for carpets, upholstery and clothing include Camira Fabrics, Swicofil and Corpo Nove.
